Federico Valverde scored an exceptional first-half hat trick against Manchester City to place Real Madrid in charge of this last-16 clash in the Champions League.

Valverde challenged City with an excellent performance, while Pep Guardiola’s team presented danger in attack but was frequently exposed defensively.

Real played without the injured duo Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, along with long-term sidelined Rodrygo, yet still possessed sufficient offensive strength to exploit City’s defensive weaknesses.

The English team initially began strongly, creating some tense moments for Real, but everything began to fall apart dramatically after 20 minutes.

Real’s first goal was straightforward; Thibaut Courtois sent a long pass that fell past Nico O’Reilly, allowing Valverde to bypass the advancing Gianluigi Donnarumma and net from a narrow angle.

Seven minutes later, the Uruguayan increased Real’s lead with a precise low shot past Donnarumma before finishing his hat-trick in spectacular fashion.

Gathering an exquisite, lofted through-pass, the Real captain displayed significant creativity to elevate the ball over Marc Guéhi in a confined area before striking past Donnarumma on the volley.

The city seemed to be sinking deeper into trouble when Real received a penalty after Donnarumma fouled Vinicius.

He executed the penalty himself, but much too nonchalantly against a goalkeeper of such skill in this scenario, with Donnarumma diving left to make the save.

The city believed they had equalized when O’Reilly seized on Thiago in the box, but Courtois extended a leg to make the save.

Prior to this match at the Bernabéu, City and Real Madrid had faced each other 15 times in the Champions League, with outcomes evenly divided among wins, losses, and draws.

Guardiola needs to motivate one of the most remarkable recoveries of his tenure if City wants to keep their hopes alive in Europe’s top tournament.

It began positively, with Jeremy Doku causing an initial challenge for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but after City allowed the first goal, which they will see as weak, Real surged in confidence thanks to their fans cheering them on in this stunning venue.

The hosts made sure Erling Haaland remained unnoticed, though the Norwegian striker was also deprived of the support he typically excels with.

Guardiola chose a team brimming with offensive ambition, yet City struggled as Real swiftly exploited the unprotected midfield and penetrated their defense.

City had their chances but encountered the typical obstacle of Courtois, particularly when he astonishingly blocked with his leg after O’Reilly intercepted Thiago in the box.

Their missed opportunities will provide City with hope for a comeback in the second leg, but this was a very disappointing defeat, and the seasoned Champions League veterans of Real Madrid will feel assured about advancing.
