The United States (US) Department of State has issued a US global security alert warning its citizens in Nigeria and across the world to exercise heightened caution following escalating hostilities with Iran.

In a statement released on Sunday, the department said evolving security conditions could affect travel plans and personal safety, particularly in the Middle East.

The warning follows recent American combat operations against Iranian targets, which have intensified tensions between Washington and Tehran.

According to the advisory, Americans may experience disruptions to international travel due to periodic airspace closures.

“Following the launch of US combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate,” the statement said.

The department urged citizens to monitor updates from embassies and consulates in their respective countries.

The State Department encouraged citizens to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security alerts and emergency assistance.

It also advised Americans to follow its official security updates channel for verified information.

The alert comes after coordinated US-Israeli strikes reportedly killed Ali Khamenei and Abdolrahim Mousavi, Iran’s supreme leader and chief of staff respectively.

Iranian officials and regional monitors estimate that more than 200 people have died, with over 700 others injured since the strikes began. Several senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were also reported killed.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Iran’s leadership has agreed to resume negotiations with Washington.

Trump stated that Tehran reached out for talks following the series of strikes on multiple Iranian cities and that he had accepted the offer.

The rapidly evolving situation has heightened global security concerns, prompting governments to reassess travel advisories and diplomatic engagements in the region.
