Turkish Airlines has announced preparations to cancel its flights set to depart from Nigeria beginning on September 2.

The airline stated that the disruption would mainly affect flights going to London and some other unnamed destinations.

Following the military coup in Niger on July 26 that ousted president Mohamed Bazoum, the junta led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani closed its airspace to overflying aircraft. The closure took effect on the evening of August 6, when several flights were already airborne.

Announcing on Tuesday that it was adjusting to the new change as a result of the closure of the Niger airspace, the airline stated that it was offering its customers the option to either alter their ticket to the next available day at no additional cost or receive a full refund if they wish to cancel the trip.

The statement by the airline reads, “Due to the closure of the Niger Airspace, starting September 2nd, there will be schedule changes on tickets departing from Nigeria. Tickets connecting to London and some other destinations will be greatly affected.

“In order not to have your clients stranded and also angry at the airport, we advise the following:

“If there’s no availability for the same date, check the availability of a new date -7 or +30 days and revalidate or reissue involuntarily due to the schedule change.

“Involuntary refund (full refund) if the new dates are not suitable for your clients.

“If the same date has other flight options, kindly reissue at a later time free of charge.”
