US President Donald Trump has sparked outrage after sharing a map that appeared to depict Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico and the Caribbean as part of the United States.
The map, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform on Monday, showed the US flag covering the territories, while the entire landmass was labelled “United States of America”.
No explanation accompanied the image.
Iceland reacted strongly to the post on Tuesday, saying it had summoned the US ambassador to make clear that the map was “wholly inappropriate”.
The controversial post was the latest in a series of unusual territorial images shared by Trump, who flooded Truth Social with about 100 posts over the US Labor Day weekend.
According to an AFP count, Trump published around 60 posts on Sunday and another 37 within 10 hours on Monday, with many of his posts relying on artificial intelligence.
Trump also shared a cartoon showing himself playing ice hockey against Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
In the image, Carney is shown lying on the ice while Trump tells him: “Get up, governor.”
The post came as Canada and the US remain embroiled in a trade dispute, with Canadian retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of US products taking effect on Tuesday.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Canada should become the 51st US state.
In another post during the weekend, Trump shared an image depicting himself receiving former US President George Washington in the Oval Office.
The territorial map has drawn fresh attention to Trump’s long-running comments about expanding US territory, particularly his calls for Canada to join the United States.
