US President Donald Trump has given the green light for former US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan to be executed by firing squad.
Hasan was convicted for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, which left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell revealed the decision in a post on X on Monday, stating that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had put forward the execution recommendation and Trump had given it his approval.
“Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended—and President Donald J. Trump has approved—death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan.
“The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution,” Parnell said.
In 2013, a military jury found Hasan guilty of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the November 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas.
At a military facility where soldiers were being processed for deployment, he opened fire, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others.
Hasan, who was serving as an Army psychiatrist at the time, received a death sentence after the trial.
This approval starts the process for his execution, though no date has been set. The Army Secretary will decide when and where the execution takes place.
Should it go ahead, Hasan’s execution would be the first carried out by the US military since 1961.
