A heavy-duty truck on Wednesday crushed a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State.
Mr. Tenimu Etuku, the FRSC’s Kogi State Sector Commander, confirmed the death of the lecturer, Mrs. Kemi Emmanuel, on Thursday in a phone chat with our Lokoja correspondent, describing the situation as “very sad and unfortunate.”
According to Etuku, the accident occurred at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the lecturer fell from a commercial motorcycle, also known as an okada, after being hit by a speeding vehicle on the highway near Crusher in the Lokoja city.
“When the accident happened, our rescue team responded promptly and quickly rushed the victim to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
“The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary,” he said.
The FRSC commander also expressed shock over the conduct of the okada rider involved in the incident.
In May 2025, 19 people, including five children, lost their lives in a tragic accident along the Obajana–Lokoja road, prompting the Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, to call for stricter enforcement of road traffic laws on federal highways.
Similarly, six people were murdered in an accident involving a passenger bus on the Lokoja-Abuja road in April, and ten people were killed in another accident on the same Obajana-Lokoja route on October 12.
Residents and students have subsequently expressed their concerns, calling on the Kogi State Government to take fast and deliberate steps to avert additional unfortunate deaths in similar occurrences.
It has been strongly proposed that laws be implemented to prevent trailers from moving through the city during the day, with movement permitted only after 9:00 p.m.
