Troy Parrott netted the decisive goal as Real Betis rallied from behind to kick off their return to Champions League action with a thrilling victory at Lille.
The ex-Tottenham player maintained his impressive performance since signing with Betis last month, having netted the sole goal in the win over Real Madrid on Friday.
Lille controlled the first half, but a solid display following the break—along with a red card for Lille—enabled the Spaniards to secure the win.
Ayase Ueda, a summer signing from Feyenoord, scored his second goal in consecutive matches by heading in from close range following a perfectly weighted pass from Ethan Mbappe, sibling of Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe.
Lille started to take control, but Betis quickly equalized when Marc Bartra connected with a curling Pablo Fornals cross and directed a diving header past Berke Ozer.
Both teams found the net with their initial shots on goal, and Lille regained the lead with their second as Alexsandro headed in a curling corner from Gaetan Perrin.
However, Bartra equalized once more just three minutes after the break when his subtle header redirected an Isco free-kick beyond Ozer.
The Spanish team subsequently scored what would become the decisive goal as Parrott struck a low shot into the far corner.
Lille’s evening quickly declined as Mbappe received a red card for seemingly elbowing Natan off the ball.
The French club sought an equalizer, introducing offensive additions like ex-Arsenal and Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud, but failed to penetrate the Betis defense.
Lille will visit Arsenal for their upcoming Champions League match on 13 October at 20:00 BST, and Betis will welcome Porto on 14 October at 20:00 BST.
