A senior Russian military officer, Lt.-Gen. Esedulla Abachev, has been seriously wounded while fighting in Ukraine, Russian officials confirmed.

Sergei Melikov, head of the Russian Republic of Dagestan, announced on Monday that Abachev, a top commander in the Leningrad Military District, had been stationed at the front since the war began.

“He has held several important commanding positions, but has always been at the very front, at the most responsible and therefore most dangerous sections of the front,” Melikov wrote on Telegram.

Although he did not disclose details of the officer’s condition, Melikov noted that the 57-year-old was receiving treatment in “one of the best military hospitals in the country.”

According to Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR), the general suffered critical injuries after a HUR strike on a Russian military column in the western Kursk region. Reports indicated that “several of the general’s limbs had to be amputated as a result of the injuries.”

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least 12 generals have been killed, according to Ukrainian figures.

The Leningrad Military District, which Abachev commands, was re-established in 2024 under the directive of President Vladimir Putin. It covers all north-western regions up to the Ural Mountains and is named after the Soviet-era title for St. Petersburg.
