President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to donate all his salaries since assuming office to a special fund aimed at supporting Nigeria’s armed forces and their families.
In a personally signed statement on Sunday, the president said the initiative forms part of activities marking his 74th birthday, while also recognising the sacrifices of military personnel across the country.
“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” Tinubu stated.
He revealed that he has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a dedicated account to manage the fund, which will cater to injured service members and families of fallen heroes.
According to him, the fund will provide direct support for personnel wounded in the line of duty, as well as widows, widowers and children of those who died serving the nation.
“As a personal commitment, all my salaries since assuming office will be paid into this account as seed funding, irrespective of existing insurance and welfare schemes,” he said.
Tinubu stressed that the initiative is not a replacement for existing welfare structures but a complementary effort to strengthen support systems for military personnel.
He also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the fund.
“I call on our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my friends and all well-wishers to support this initiative. Details of the account will be made available in due course,” he added.
Describing the move as a national obligation, the president said the country must continue to honour those who risk their lives for peace and security.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty,” he said.
