President Bola Tinubu has promised the Super Falcons a suitable celebration when they return from Morocco, where they won the WAFCON title for the record-extending tenth time on Saturday.
The Super Falcons completed a spectacular comeback at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium, defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 and claiming the 2024 title.
Morocco gained an early lead in the 12th minute, thanks to the tournament’s top goal scorer, Ghizlane Chebbak, then doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Sanaâ Mssoudy scored.
Nigeria replied with a great second-half performance.
Esther Okoronkwo scored from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, setting up Folasade Ijamilusi for the equaliser in the 71st minute.
Jennifer Echegini completed the comeback in the 88th minute, converting Okoronkwo’s high free kick.
Tinubu joined in the team’s celebrations via video call with them and their officials on Saturday.
“As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy.
“You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the ministers and officials.
“To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves, and avoid injuries,” Tinubu said.
When Captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed gratitude to the president for approving the payment of their bonuses and pledged to present the trophy in Abuja, Tinubu replied, “Good, I am looking forward to that.”
Earlier, President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, lauded the team’s success as a testament to Nigerians’ perseverance and fighting spirit.
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for.
The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you,” he added.
The fascinating win represented the Falcons’ tenth title on the African level, following victories in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
