President Bola Tinubu congratulates Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Coordinating s for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her reelection as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

This was revealed in a statement on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President for Information and Strategy.

According to the statement, Tinubu is delighted that Okonjo-Iweala has been unanimously appointed to a second four-year term, demonstrating the international community’s faith and confidence in her leadership to advance multilateral trade for sustainable global development.

Tinubu expressed assurance that her continuing leadership will cement the international economic organisation’s position as a crucial pillar of inclusive global economic growth and good governance over the next four years.

Nigeria, a dedicated member of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), will continue to support the WTO’s aim of fostering a fair, inclusive, and equitable global trading system.

Tinubu assures Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she consolidates her bold reforms, dedication to equitable global trade practices, and tireless efforts to promote international cooperation.

In 2021, the famous development economist and global financial specialist became the first African and woman to chair the World Trade Organisation, which has 164 members.

Okonjo-Iweala’s first term as the WTO’s seventh Director-General will end on August 31, 2025, with the second term beginning September 1.
