President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the 2025 Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, extending the implementation period of the budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to the president, said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the assent followed the “swift passage” of the amended bill by both the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Onanuga said the extension would give ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) more time to complete ongoing capital projects.
“It ensures that funds already appropriated are fully put to work for Nigerians, without disrupting critical programmes,” the statement reads.
“The President commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their prompt consideration of the bill, a further sign of the cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature in the service of the nation.”
Speaking on Tuesday during the passage of the bill at plenary, Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader, said the extension would allow MDAs more time to complete capital projects for which funds had already been appropriated and released.
Bamidele said procurement, contract execution, mobilisation, certification of works and payment processes could affect the implementation of projects within the existing timeframe.
This is the fourth time the National Assembly has moved the deadline for implementing the 2025 capital budget.
On December 23, 2025, lawmakers approved a three-month extension of the capital budget, pushing the deadline to March 31, 2026, after repealing and re-enacting the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Acts.
On March 31, the Senate and House of Representatives again extended the implementation deadline from March 31 to June 30.
On June 15, the National Assembly extended the implementation period for the capital component of the budget from June 30 to September 30.
At the time, Bamidele said the execution of capital projects under the 2025 Appropriation Act had not reached an optimal level.
