Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Tems has unveiled a bold new initiative designed to uplift and empower African women pursuing careers in the music industry.

The project, called ‘The Leading Vibe’, was officially launched on Wednesday via her Instagram page. Aimed at bridging the gender gap in Africa’s male-dominated music scene, the initiative will provide training, tools, and a supportive community for aspiring female music creators.

“From my self-taught journey with no roadmap, I created this initiative to support African women in music—those breaking barriers, building boldly, and leading the next wave,” said the 30-year-old singer.

In a heartfelt video accompanying the announcement, Tems shared her personal struggles breaking into the industry, highlighting the limited representation of women in key roles such as music production, sound engineering, and songwriting.

“There are thousands of young women just like me—with a voice, a gift, and a desire to be heard. I want to be someone that shows people that there’s hope,” she said.

“While the music industry is great, there hasn’t always been a space for women creators. That’s why I’m starting The Leading Vibe—for the ones who dare to be different and are waiting for a space where they can be their best selves.”

    First Stop: Lagos, August 8–9

The programme kicks off in Lagos with a two-day immersive experience for Nigerian women aged 18 to 35. The event will feature workshops, masterclasses, and panel sessions led by seasoned professionals across the industry.

Participants will gain hands-on training, access to professional music tools, and valuable networking opportunities designed to set them on a path to long-term success.

Tems revealed that this is just the beginning, with plans to expand The Leading Vibe to other African countries in the near future.

    Applications Now Open

Interested women can now apply to be part of the Lagos launch experience. With limited spaces available, the call is out for talented, passionate female creatives ready to ignite their musical journey.

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, rose to prominence in 2020 with her breakout collaboration with Wizkid on the global hit ‘Essence’. She earned her first Grammy in 2023 for her contribution to ‘Wait For U’ by Future and took home her second at the 2025 Grammy Awards in the Best African Performance category.

With The Leading Vibe, Tems is not just making music—she’s making room for more women to rise.
