Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, is dead.

Rufai passed away on Thursday after battling with a prolonged illness. He was 61 years.

Dodomayana, as he is fondly called, was widely regarded as of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has produced.

During his playing career that lasted two decades, Rufai played in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

He also represented Nigeria at two World Cups and as many Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Waidi Akanni, a former teammate and associate, confirmed the legendary goalkeeper’s death on Thursday.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), also confirmed the news on its official X handle.

NFF posted, “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.

“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.

Widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, Rufai earned 65 international caps for the Super Eagles.

He featured prominently in two FIFA World Cup tournaments and was part of the national team that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1994.

His club career spanned local and international engagements, including stints with Stationery Stores in Nigeria and Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands.

Known for his composure and leadership on the field, Rufai was a key figure in Nigerian football during the 1990s.
