Human rights activist and 2027 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has resigned as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress, AAC.

The party announced this in a statement on Tuesday shortly after Sowore emerged as the AAC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections during the party’s primaries in Abuja.

According to the party, Samuel Ajeigbe has been appointed as the new National Chairman of the party.

“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress.

“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement read.

The development signals a significant leadership turnover inside the AAC as the party gears up for the 2027 elections.

Sowore resigned just hours after securing the party’s presidential nomination with full support from delegates and party officials during the Federal Capital Territory primaries.

The activist was presented with the party’s flag in front of cheering fans and delegates from various states across the country.

Speaking after accepting the nomination, Sowore stated that the AAC was established to create a “new Nigeria” free of corruption, insecurity, and poor governance.

He praised party members for their dedication despite political pressure and economic hardship in the country.

Sowore also slammed the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing it of incompetence and attempting to influence public opinion ahead of the 2027 elections.

During his speech at the primaries, he denied that over 10 million APC members voted in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential primary.

“There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members.

“I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members,” Sowore said.
