Pro-democracy activist Omoyele Sowore has called for a “total occupation” of MTN Nigeria, accusing the telecom giant of failing millions of subscribers.
In a series of posts on Facebook, Sowore criticised MTN Nigeria’s dominance in the telecommunications sector, arguing that its market power has not translated into improved service delivery for customers.
He said the company, which controls the largest share of subscribers in Nigeria, has shown “disregard” for users who rely on its network daily.
Service complaints and accountability concerns
Sowore listed persistent challenges faced by subscribers, including unexplained data depletion, frequent call failures and poor overall service quality.
He also alleged a lack of accountability, claiming that customer complaints are often ignored and that users struggle to get meaningful resolution.
According to him, a company with such a critical role in national communication infrastructure must be held to higher standards.
The activist urged Nigerians to demand better services and accountability from telecom operators, warning that continued silence would only worsen the situation.
His comments formed part of a broader criticism of systemic issues in the country, ranging from insecurity to alleged financial exploitation across sectors.
Sowore argued that citizens must take a stand against what he described as widespread institutional failures.
Nigeria’s telecom sector has faced recurring complaints over service quality and billing transparency, despite significant growth in subscriber numbers over the years.
While operators often cite infrastructure challenges, regulatory constraints and rising operational costs, consumer advocacy groups have continued to push for improved service delivery and stronger oversight.
Sowore’s remarks are likely to intensify ongoing debates around consumer protection and corporate responsibility in Nigeria’s telecom industry.
