Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled a statue of renowned novelist and literary icon, Chinua Achebe, in his hometown of Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The monument, located at Ugwunwasike Roundabout, was unveiled on Saturday, 13 years after the celebrated author’s death, in a ceremony aimed at preserving his enduring legacy.

Speaking at the event, Soludo described Achebe as a global symbol of excellence whose impact on literature continues to inspire generations across the world.

According to the governor, his administration remains committed to supporting initiatives that preserve Achebe’s legacy while nurturing the next generation of literary talents in Anambra.

“Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world’s greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili North and Anambra State,” Soludo said.

Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, said both Achebe and Soludo have brought global recognition to Anambra through their achievements.

The Anambra State Government said the monument will further preserve Achebe’s legacy while promoting the cultural heritage and tourism potential of Ogidi.

    Achebe’s Enduring Legacy

Widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, Chinua Achebe was born on November 16, 1930, in Ogidi, Anambra State, to the family of an Anglican evangelist.

He rose to international prominence with Things Fall Apart, first published in 1958. The novel has been translated into dozens of languages and remains one of Africa’s most widely read literary works.

Beyond fiction, Achebe authored essays, poetry and short stories examining colonialism, identity, governance and post-independence Africa. His notable works include No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God, and The Trouble with Nigeria.

Achebe died on March 21, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, at the age of 82, and was laid to rest in his hometown of Ogidi on May 23, 2013.
