Ireti Doyle, the Nollywood actress, has lamented that social media “is becoming too toxic” for her.

The 58-year-old film star, who hasn’t been active on the social media platforms in the past weeks took Instagram to explain her reasons for the absence.

Doyle also reflected on her transition into the phase of life known as being an “empty nester” — a parent whose children have grown and left home.

“I used to wonder what I’d do with myself once I become an ‘empty nester’… now I know. Had to disappear again. The streets of social media (nay, the world in general) is becoming too toxic for my quiet soul. How have you been? I hope you’re protecting yourself?” she wrote.

Doyle is a seasoned figure in Nigerian entertainment. Born on May 3, 1967, in Ondo state, she spent part of her childhood in Boston, USA, before returning to Nigeria. She is a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Jos.

Her career began in front of the camera as a producer and presenter, most notably creating and hosting the popular fashion and lifestyle show ‘Oge with Iretiola’ for ten years. She also anchored programmes like ‘Morning Ride’ on STV.

Doyle’s breakthrough in acting came in the late 1990s, and she has since built an acclaimed career with performances in films such as ‘Sitanda’ (2006), ‘Across the Niger’ (2009), and ‘Torn’ (2013).

Her work has earned her several accolades, including a Best Supporting Actress win at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

She was married to broadcaster Patrick Doyle, a union that ended in divorce.
