Senator Shehu Sani has spoken against the notion that state police are what Nigeria needs to fight the insurgency ravaging the country.
Sani, in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Monday, noted that it is a “mirage” to think that state policing will solve Nigeria’s security issues.
Over the years, there have been calls for state policing to help fight terrorism in the country.
The Nigerian Senate has stated that the federal parliament is ready to review the constitution to accommodate state police, provided the decentralisation of the security system ends insecurity.
President Bola Tinubu, at a meeting with state governors on Thursday, approved the constitution of a committee to explore the modalities for the establishment of state police.
However, the former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central at the Senate noted that the creation of States controlled police is “a recipe for anarchy” because “the state police will simply be an armed wing of the ruling party.”
Sani’s statement reads, “The idea that the state police will solve all the security problems in the country is a mirage.
“What magic can the state police perform that the military, police, and civil defence couldn’t?
“The state police will simply be an armed wing of the ruling party of each state. It’s a recipe for anarchy.”
