The Senate will today, October 29, 2025, screen the newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu.

In a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, Tinubu urged lawmakers to give “expeditious consideration” to the appointments.

Tinubu named General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff; and Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Akpabio referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for screening and confirmation, scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

The development comes just 48 hours after Tinubu met with the new service chiefs behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, his first formal meeting with the military leadership since last Friday’s massive upheaval.

The Presidency stated that the shake-up was “in furtherance of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the national security architecture.”

Tinubu also thanked the outgoing Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other retired officers for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.”

He challenged the new appointments to justify the trust placed in them by boosting professionalism, vigilance, and unity throughout the Armed Forces.

The administration thinks that once confirmed, the new appointments will improve interagency collaboration and strengthen the battle against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats across the country.
