The Nigerian Army 2 Brigade in Akwa Ibom State has denounced the murder of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, the Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion.

He died after his wife allegedly set him ablaze following a domestic argument at the Willington Bassey Barracks.

The terrible occurrence followed a similar one involving a 42-year-old man named Christopher Enobong Jimmy, who was shot dead by a soldier after offering him a ride to his destination.

The incident, which occurred along the Akwa Ibom portion of the East-West Road from Port Harcourt, elicited angry comments from members of the public who denounced the crime.

According to reports, Jimmy, a manager with a clearing and forwarding company at Onne Ports in Rivers State, was driving from his base to his village on Sunday, May 23, 2021, when he saw a soldier dressed in full military uniform and armed with an AK-47 rifle, who flagged him down for a ride to Ette Junction in Ikot Abasi, Jimmy’s destination.

However, the help resulted in many negative consequences, as the soldiers murdered his donor in cold blood.
Chronicle NG gathered that the incident involving Haruna and his wife occurred on September 22, 2025.

The Nigerian Army denounced the officer’s execution in a statement issued in Uyo on Tuesday by its Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lawal Muhammad, while also expressing condolences to the family.

According to the statement, the deceased died after serious burns sustained in a domestic altercation with his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna, on September 22, 2025, at their home in Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State.

According to preliminary findings, the unfortunate incident occurred following a violent dispute between the pair, which apparently sprang from a family dilemma and intensified when Mrs. Haruna allegedly set fire to properties in the house, trapping the officer in the inferno.

The statement went on to say that Haruna suffered severe burns but was first stabilized at the Battalion Medical Facility before being moved to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for additional treatment, where he died early Tuesday morning.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognizing the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.

“The Nigerian Army is calling for all parties to remain calm while awaiting the outcome of the military police investigation,” the statement read.
