A British man was killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle in Kenyan President William Ruto’s motorcade.

Edgar Charles Frederick, 79, died on Thursday after being struck in an accident on a prominent route in Nairobi, the capital.

Police arrested the driver of the vehicle who was later released on bail.

They believe he was driving a support vehicle in the back of Ruto’s formal motorcade.

The president’s security detail had passed by the time the accident occurred.

According to police spokesman Michael Muchiri, Mr. Frederick was visiting Kenya to see his sister and nephew, who are residents of the country.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed, and a post-mortem will be conducted later on Friday.

The driver, who failed to stop after the incident, will appear in court following an investigation.

This is not the first time a president’s or deputy president’s motorcade has killed a pedestrian, and in a number of cases, members of the president’s travelling party have died.

Some believe the latest case is being paid more attention because the victim is a foreigner.

A spokesperson for the UK High Commission said officials were aware of the reports and were seeking more information.

Mr. Muchiri told the BBC that the car belonged to the regional administration and was supporting the presidential detail.

Ruto held events near the scene on Thursday as part of his continuing political engagement with the public in the capital.
