Russian airstrikes kill three, injure 12 in Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Sumy regions

Russian airstrikes in eastern Ukraine have claimed at least three lives and injured 12 others, with major damage inflicted on key railway infrastructure in the Kharkiv region.

According to a statement by Ukrainian Railways, “Russian terrorists inflicted a massive strike on the railway infrastructure of Lozova.” The attack, which occurred overnight, left a passenger train mangled and charred while also damaging the station building. A duty mechanic was confirmed dead.

President Volodymyr Zelensky also addressed the attack, revealing that over 25 Iranian-designed Shahed drones were launched at the city.

“The railway was damaged, including a depot and a station,” he wrote on social media. “Civilian infrastructure” was the primary target, he added, noting that 10 people were wounded in the strike.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia deployed 46 attack drones and one ballistic missile in the assault — a lower number compared to earlier waves involving several hundred aerial weapons.

Lozova’s mayor, Sergiy Zelensky, described the incident as “the most massive attack” on the city since the war began in 2022.

In a separate incident in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, another Russian strike killed two individuals at an agricultural enterprise, according to regional authorities.

These renewed attacks come as tensions rise over a looming Friday deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump. Washington has warned that unless tangible progress is made toward peace, severe sanctions will be imposed on Moscow. Despite three rounds of peace talks held in Istanbul, negotiations have stalled with no breakthrough in sight.

The Russian military appears to be intensifying ground offensives to seize more Ukrainian territory, even as diplomatic efforts falter. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, ahead of the sanctions deadline.
