Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat at Celta Vigo in La Liga, finishing with nine men and increasing the pressure on manager Xabi Alonso.

Seven minutes after the break, Celta took an improbable lead when substitute Williot Swedberg clipped a beautiful finish into the bottom corner, his first league goal of the season.

Real’s situation worsened in the 64th minute when they were reduced to ten men when Fran Garcia received two yellow cards in a minute.

Madrid were reduced to nine men in the 92nd minute after Alvaro Carreras received two rapid yellow cards, one for dissent and the other for harsh and abusive language.

Swedberg added a second after Carreras was dismissed, and the hosts collapsed.

Celta’s first La Liga victory over Real since May 2014 ends a 22-game losing streak.

Earlier this week, Alonso stated that he had spoken with club president Florentino Perez about the club’s poor play, and he was given a yellow card as tensions rose within the Bernabeu.

Real missed chances, with Arda Guler shooting barely wide from close range and Kylian Mbappe dipping a shot just over the bar.

As a result, Madrid remains second, four points behind leaders Barcelona, with Celta in tenth place.

This is Real’s first encounter since Trent Alexander-Arnold was out for two months with a thigh injury, as his interrupted first season continues, while defender Éder Militao was replaced in the 23rd minute after injuring his hamstring, dealing a further blow to Real’s defensive lines.

Alonso’s team will play Manchester City in a crucial Champions League showdown on Wednesday,
