    Ramadan Fast begins today

    The Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III yesterday affirmed the sighting of a new moon signifying the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan fasting today.

    The Sultan urged all Muslim ummah in Nigerian to commence fasting today Saturday May 27, 2017 following reliable reports received from various Muslim leaders and organizations across the country.

    The Sultan, while speaking in his palace in Sokoto, noted that the new Moon of Ramadan, 1438 AH was sighted in many states of the federation as confirmed by the National Moon Sighting Committee.

    “In accordance with Islamic law, we have the pleasure to announce that today, Friday, 29th day of Shahban 1438 AH of the holy prophet (SWA) which is equivalent to 17th May as marked the end of Shaaban and the beginning of the new month of Ramadan which has been sighted in many states of the federation.”

    “Consequently, upon this, tomorrow Saturday, 27th day of May, 2017 becomes the first day of Ramadan 1438 AH. We therefore call on Muslim Ummah to commence fasting accordingly,” Sultan said.

    The Sultan who appealed for understanding, tolerance and love among people of belief, admonished the Muslim ummah to seek the face of Almighty Allah in the fasting period.

    He further called on all Muslims to faithfully pray for sustained peace, unity as well as inter-religious harmony in the country. The religious leader also called for prayers and support of leaders at all levels.

    In a related development, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal assured the people of his state that there will be free feeding as well as other forms of assistance for the less privilege despite the pressing economic reality in country.

    According to Tambuwal, Sokoto state will be spending over N80 million for free feeding adding that the Ramadan period should be used as an avenue for rededication to the Almighty Allah.
