The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that the MMIA airspace remains temporarily closed following a fire outbreak at Terminal One of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

In an update issued on Monday, FAAN said the closure was in line with established aviation safety protocols.

According to FAAN, six people — three males and three females — sustained injuries during the incident. All are currently in stable condition.

One of the affected individuals has been transferred to the FAAN headquarters hospital for further medical evaluation and remains stable.

Emergency response operations remain active, with coordinated firefighting, rescue and safety teams continuing containment and recovery efforts.

FAAN disclosed that a crane was deployed to support rescue operations at the Control Tower. All 14 persons initially trapped in the facility were safely evacuated.

As an added safety measure, the sixth floor of the affected building has been completely evacuated to allow emergency teams manage risks effectively.

Preliminary findings by the fire service indicate that the blaze originated from the server room on the first floor of Terminal One.

While the fire inside the departure hall has been largely brought under control, responders are maintaining close surveillance to prevent it spreading to adjoining sections of the terminal.

FAAN confirmed that the airspace remains shut as a precaution.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is working to establish a temporary Control Tower to ensure the safe and timely restoration of airport operations.

All emergency procedures were promptly activated, FAAN added, noting that it is collaborating with relevant agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure and flight operations.

Meanwhile, Chronicle NG understands that an Air France flight from Paris to Lagos, which departed around 3pm, has returned to Paris due to the disruption.
