The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised fresh concerns over coordinated attacks on railway infrastructure in parts of the country, warning that persistent vandalism poses a serious threat to public safety and national security.

In a statement issued at the weekend, the Corporation disclosed that new incidents of rail vandalism were recorded in Plateau and Bauchi states. The agency described the attacks as deliberate acts targeting critical national infrastructure and disrupting railway operations.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, condemned the repeated destruction of railway facilities, describing it as sabotage against national development and a danger to both passengers and railway personnel.

Despite the security concerns, the Corporation announced additional train services on the Lagos–Ibadan corridor ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations to ease passenger movement during the festive period.

According to the NRC, six train trips will operate on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, instead of the usual four daily services on the Lagos–Ibadan Train Service route.

The increase is expected to accommodate higher passenger traffic as many Nigerians travel for the Sallah celebration.

Meanwhile, ram dealers have appealed to governments at all levels to speed up payment of May salaries to boost patronage ahead of Eid-el-Kabir.

A ram seller in Ilorin, Olarewaju Taofeeq, said prices of rams have risen sharply due to increased transportation costs and expensive animal feed.

According to him, rams currently sell between N150,000 and N1 million depending on size and quality.

Taofeeq expressed optimism that sales would improve closer to the celebration if workers receive their salaries early.
