Frank Geng Quangrong, a Chinese man on trial for the murder of his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Buhari, was condemned to death by hanging by a Kano High Court.

Quangrong, 47, was found guilty of culpable homicide, punishable by death under Section 221 of Kano State’s Penal Code Law, and punished accordingly.

On September 16, 2022, Mr. Quangrong stabbed his 23-year-old daughter to death at her family home in Janbulo quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji, held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I here find him guilty. I hereby recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict.”

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Kano State Attorney-General Haruna Dederi, told the court that the convict committed the offense on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters in Kano.

He stated that on the same date, at approximately 9 p.m., the convict stabbed the dead with a knife in her home in Janbulo Quarters, Kano, for an unidentified cause.

“The victim was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, the prosecution presented six witnesses to prove their case against the defendant and four exhibits.

According to the prosecutor, the offense violates Section 221(b) of the Penal Code.

The defense attorney, Muhummad Dan’azumi, introduced the defendant to defend himself and one other witness and produced five exhibits.

Mr. Dan’azumi sought the court’s proposal to propose the defendant for the prerogative of pity under ACJL Section 313.

In his testimony, he said,” I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defense after she grabbed my testes.”

He urged the court to balance justice with mercy in its ruling.

Fatima Zubairu, the victim’s mother, expressed her delight with the judge’s decision in an interview with reporters shortly after the ruling.
