Frank Geng Quangrong, the Chinese national accused of killing his girlfriend, Ummulkhulsum Sani Buhari, in Kano State, has asked Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court to temper justice and mercy.

The Chinese national denied killing his Nigerian girlfriend intentionally.

In his evidence on Tuesday, Quangrong said he stabbed his partner in self-defense after she reportedly grabbed his testicles in September 2022.

Pleading for mercy, Quangrong said, “I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defense after she grabbed my testes.”

The Chinese national who pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in its judgment further said, “I want this honorable court to temper justice with mercy in the judgment in view of the fact that I stated earlier.”

Quangrong killed his lover, Ummulkhulsum, in September 2022, following a quarrel between them in Kano State.

Justice Ado Ma’aji deferred the case until March 29, 2024, to rule on the allegations of culpable homicide.

The court set the judgment date after both the prosecution and defense lawyers delivered their last written statements.

Quangrong was charged with culpable homicide under Section 221(b) of the Penal Code, and the prosecution produced six witnesses to support their case.

The prosecution witnesses, who included the deceased’s mother and sister, a neighbor, a doctor, and Investigative Police Officers (IPO), testified about the events that occurred between Quangrong and Ummulkhulsum, particularly on September 16, 2022.

However, during his testimony, Quangrong denied purposefully killing Ummulkhulsum.

Meanwhile, Dr. Abubakar Abdullahi, a consultant urologist, testified as a subpoena witness.

Dr. Abdullahi, who has over 30 years of expertise, revealed in his expert testimony how continuous pressure on the end nerves can induce alterations in sensations.

The doctor also stated that adrenaline release could cause overstimulation of the vagus nerve, resulting in terror, fight, or flight responses.

Following his arrest in September 2022, Mike Zhang, the head of the Chinese Business Community in Nigeria (CBCAN), issued a statement condemning the killing and urging appropriate security forces to treat the heinous conduct responsibly.

“The Chinese community in Kano is fully in support of the law taking its proper course.

“The people of China appreciate the hospitality so far received in Kano and will continue to be law-abiding and contribute to the state’s development.

“We condoled with the family of the deceased, a graduate of Agriculture Science from Kampala University,” the statement read.
