A Lagos-based law firm, Brown & Cooper Solicitors, has given Qatar Airways 14 days to recover and return a passenger’s allegedly missing luggage or pay N11.812 million in compensation.
The demand was contained in a letter dated July 25, 2026, addressed to the airline on behalf of their client, Mr Peter Omopariola Fowoyo, who alleged that one of his three checked-in bags went missing after he travelled from Doha, Qatar, to Lagos aboard Flight QR1407 on June 27, 2026.
According to the solicitors, Fowoyo, a journalist, checked in three bags bearing tag numbers 0157264140, 0157264141 and 0157264142 before boarding the flight.
However, upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, he recovered only two of them.
The letter stated that the passenger waited for several hours at the baggage claim area before noticing that only a similar-looking bag remained unclaimed.
He subsequently reported the incident to officials of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), where he completed the required baggage irregularity report and was assured that efforts would be made to trace the missing luggage.
Brown & Cooper Solicitors alleged that despite the complaint, the bag has not been recovered.
The law firm claimed the missing medium-sized black briefcase contained valuables, including US$3,000 in cash, two gold wristwatches, medication, 15 pairs of new trousers, a pair of new blue Nike canvas shoes, a pair of new black shoes, a pair of blue Adidas canvas shoes, two packs of new singlets, 10 pairs of new socks, a vegetable cutter, two packets of biscuits and a packet of cashew nuts.
The solicitors further stated that receipts for the listed items were also inside the missing luggage, making it impossible for their client to produce documentary proof of purchase.
Consequently, the firm demanded that Qatar Airways either recover and return the luggage or pay N11,812,000, representing the alleged value of the missing contents, within 14 days of receiving the letter.
The solicitors warned that if the airline failed to comply with the demand, their client would file legal proceedings without further notice.
As of press time, Qatar Airways had not publicly responded to the allegations or the compensation demand.
