Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, expressing Russia’s assistance for attempts to address the increasing Middle East crisis following the collapse of talks between Iran and the US.
According to the Kremlin, Putin stated that he was willing to assist diplomatic efforts toward a settlement.
“Vladimir Putin emphasized his readiness to further facilitate the search for a political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict and to mediate efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,” the Kremlin said in its readout of the call, as reported by AFP.
The call came after Iran and the US failed to reach an agreement to end hostilities in the Middle East conflict.
Despite the breakdown, world leaders urged both sides to pursue diplomatic options.
A US official claimed the delegation, which included lead negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, withdrew after protracted meetings yielded no major progress on the Iran problem.
During a layover at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, a US official accompanying Vice President JD Vance stated that no members of the team had remained behind, despite prior anticipation that more negotiations could take place.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf stated that Washington failed to establish confidence throughout the meetings.
“My colleagues in the Iranian delegation put forward constructive initiatives, but the other side was unable to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation,” he wrote on X.
The United States and Israel struck Iran on February 28, eliciting a response from Tehran that has plunged the Middle East into turmoil and rattled the global economy.
