The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has officially opened applications for its 2025/2026 Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme (OSS), a flagship government initiative aimed at developing highly skilled Nigerian professionals for leadership roles in the oil and gas industry.

A Strategic Overhaul for National Impact

Announced via PTDF’s official social media channels, the latest iteration of the OSS programme reflects a strategic shift towards building indigenous capacity while retaining international academic exposure. The scheme, which has supported thousands of scholars over the years, has been revamped to align with Nigeria’s broader developmental goals.

According to PTDF, the new structure places increased emphasis on local content development while maintaining its commitment to delivering world-class postgraduate education abroad.

    Study Destinations and Academic Collaborations

The scholarship offers fully funded MSc and PhD opportunities in selected countries with established academic partnerships:

United Kingdom: Master’s programmes across various petroleum-related fields. PhD sponsorships will now adopt a Split-Site model, combining study in Nigeria and the UK. This format is supported by the PTDF College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), in collaboration with: Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, University of Portsmouth.

Germany, France, and Malaysia: Full MSc and PhD sponsorships remain available through longstanding partnerships with leading institutions.

    What the Scholarship Covers

Successful candidates will receive comprehensive support, including:

Return airfare from Nigeria to the host country.

Full tuition and bench fees (if applicable).

    Monthly living allowance.

Health insurance for the duration of the programme.

Research funding for PhD candidates focusing on oil and gas sector challenges in Nigeria.

These benefits are designed to ensure a stress-free academic journey and encourage exceptional performance.

    Who Can Apply? Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens and meet the following academic and professional requirements:

    For MSc Applicants:

Minimum of Second Class Upper (2:1) in a relevant field.

Candidates with a Second Class Lower (2:2) must demonstrate at least two years of relevant industry experience.

    For PhD Applicants:

A relevant Master’s degree with a strong academic record.

A well-structured research proposal related to Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

    General Requirements:

    Valid National Identity Number (NIN).

    NYSC discharge certificate.

Proficiency in computer use and Microsoft Office.

Must not be in receipt of another scholarship or employed by PTDF, NNPC, or their subsidiaries.

    Application Deadline and Submission Process

All applications must be submitted online via the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal. The portal is currently live and will close on 4th June 2025.

Applicants are strongly advised to review all guidelines on the portal and upload complete supporting documentation, including transcripts, references, and a personal statement.

Why It Matters: PTDF’s Long-Term Vision

As part of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, PTDF is at the forefront of human capital development in Nigeria’s energy landscape. The OSS is not just an academic offering—it is a strategic national investment in talent and innovation.

Beyond scholarships, PTDF funds research projects, enhances infrastructure in tertiary institutions, and supports specialist bodies such as CPESK. The goal is clear: to empower Nigerians to drive the country’s oil and gas sector independently and sustainably.

    Building a Self-Reliant Energy Future

As global energy dynamics shift towards sustainability and innovation, Nigeria must cultivate homegrown experts capable of navigating and leading this transformation. The PTDF scholarship is key to this ambition—equipping future leaders with global insights grounded in national relevance.

Conclusion: A Gateway to Global Impact

The 2025/2026 PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme offers Nigerian graduates a unique chance to access top-tier education abroad while contributing to national progress.
