Aston Villa’s Champions League dream came to a heartbreaking end at Villa Park, as they narrowly missed out on a historic comeback, falling 5-4 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain despite winning 3-2 on the night.

The atmosphere was electric from the first whistle, with the home crowd willing their team on.

Aston Villa, trailing 4-1 from the first leg, came out with urgency, testing PSG early on. But the French champions weathered the early storm and struck first through Achraf Hakimi, who pounced on a spilled cross by Emiliano Martinez to fire PSG into the lead.

Moments later, Nuno Mendes doubled PSG’s advantage after latching onto Ousmane Dembele’s pass and smashing home via the post. At 2-0 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate, the tie looked dead.

But Villa, under Unai Emery’s guidance, refused to quit. A deflected Youri Tielemans effort gave them a glimmer of hope before the break. Then came a whirlwind second half.

Captain John McGinn lit up Villa Park with a stunning long-range strike to make it 2-2 on the night.

Just two minutes later, Marcus Rashford danced through the PSG defence to set up Ezri Konsa, who slotted home to bring Villa within a single goal of extra time.

The hosts pushed relentlessly in the final stages, with chances falling to Konsa, Tielemans, and Marco Asensio, but they couldn’t find the all-important fourth goal. PSG held on by the narrowest of margins to book their place in the semi-finals, where they’ll face either Real Madrid or Arsenal.

Despite the loss, Aston Villa exit the competition with pride, having pushed one of Europe’s elite to the brink.
