A protest erupted on Monday at the Peoples Democratic Party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, as supporters of the party’s factional interim National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman, stormed the building.
The group chanted solidarity songs and asked that the National Working Committee, chaired by Umar Damagum, leave the premises immediately.
Chronicle NG reports that Abdulrahman was named the acting national chairman of the party last week as the leadership crisis threatening the soul of the party worsened with the suspension of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for a period of one month.
In a sudden turn of events, the side loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, gathered at a different site in Abuja and declared the suspension of the Damagum-led NWC.
The demonstrators, who accused the Damagum-led leadership of mismanaging party operations, promised to retake control of the secretariat for the Abdulrahman-led faction.
Security personnel have been dispatched to the protest venue to prevent a breakdown in law and order as both factions battle for control of the party’s headquarters.
However, the wing of the party’s NWC led by Abdulrahman has seized control of the party’s National Chairman’s position.
