The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis, who was hospitalized last week, is suffering from pneumonia in both lungs. Officials stated that his clinical condition remains “complex.”

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday after experiencing breathing difficulties. Initially diagnosed with bronchitis, his scheduled events have been canceled until the end of the weekend.

“The laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture,” the Vatican said in a statement.

According to the statement, the Pope is battling a polymicrobial infection on top of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, complicating his treatment and requiring cortisone and antibiotic therapy.

“The follow-up chest CT scan which the Holy Father underwent this afternoon… demonstrated the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which required additional drug therapy. Nevertheless, Pope Francis is in good spirits,” the statement added.

Despite his health challenges, the Vatican noted that Pope Francis has been spending his time in the hospital alternating between rest, prayer, and reading.

Since assuming the papacy in 2013, Pope Francis has faced several health issues, including hernia and colon surgery. He also uses a wheelchair due to persistent knee pain.
