The Lagos State Police Command has ruled out terrorism, sabotage, or the use of explosives in the incident that began as an explosion in the Mushin area of the state.
The command stated that their investigation concluded that the incident was caused by the failure of a pressurized mechanical component rather than an improvised explosive device or other criminal behavior.
SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, confirmed this in a statement made on Thursday.
According to the statement, technical investigations found no signs of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive remnants, or blast characteristics typically associated with explosive attacks.
According to police, the incident was caused by the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component outside the vehicle.
This failure resulted in a sudden release of energy, shattering the front passenger-side glass panels and injuring the occupant.
“Investigation established that the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component outside the vehicle.
“This failure generated a sudden release of energy, which caused the shattering of the vehicle’s front passenger-side glass panels and resulted in minor injuries to the occupant.
“Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a mechanical explosion,” the statement said.
The explosion occurred on Monday, June 22, at 22 Wey Street in the busy Shoe Materials Market area of Oke Mushin.
Initial reports caused widespread alarm as eyewitnesses and residents claimed a loud explosion involving a parked Toyota Sienna.
Many suspected an IED had been planted beneath the truck, raising immediate concerns about terrorism.
In response, CP Tijani Fatai, the State Commissioner for Police at Lagos State Command, visited the site and certified it safe and clear of any IED threat.
The command assured people that the occurrence was unrelated to any terrorist activity, illegal usage of explosives, or other security issues.
