The Nigeria Police Force has granted former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha bail after questioning him over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation.
Okorocha, who represented Imo West Senatorial District in the Senate, was arrested at the REIZ Continental Hotel in Abuja on Monday night and released after approximately an hour of questioning.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, reportedly confirmed both the arrest and subsequent release, stating that the former governor had been instructed to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning.
However, our correspondent was unable to independently verify details of the interrogation because the police spokesperson did not respond to phone calls made to him.
The police stated that investigations into the allegations were continuing but provided no details about the alleged offenses.
The arrest reportedly came after Okorocha failed to respond to earlier police invitations for questioning in connection with the investigation.
He was first invited to appear at the Force Headquarters on September 2, but the appointment was moved to September 8 at the request of his lawyers.
Okorocha reportedly failed to attend the rescheduled invitation, leading to the latest police action.
The police were also reportedly said to have secured a bench warrant to compel him to appear for questioning.
Nevertheless, the police have not fully revealed the circumstances surrounding the alleged forgery, impersonation, and conspiracy.
The former governor has not reportedly been formally charged with any offense related to the investigation.
