The Delta State Police Command has demoted an inspector and a corporal after they were found guilty of extortion and other crimes in connection with a viral video showing them taking money from a motorist using a Point-of-Sale terminal inside a police station.
SP Bright Edafe, the command’s police public relations officer, announced the news in a statement made Tuesday.
According to the announcement, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, Commissioner of Police, affirmed the findings of Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim’s orderly room trial at C Division, Asaba.
The cops, who were caught in a viral video on January 13, 2026, accepting money from a driver through a POS terminal within the station, were found guilty of “Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion, and Discreditable Conduct,” in violation of the Police Act of 2020.
Following the disciplinary processes, Jeremiah’s status was dropped from inspector to sergeant, while Ehirim’s level was decreased from corporal to constable.
Oyeniyi reiterated the Force’s stand on extortion, stating that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu “unequivocally prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations.”
The Commissioner further stated that “no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise” and that “any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.”
He urged the command’s officers and men to maintain “the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for the rights of citizens,” noting that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to others.
Oyeniyi stated that the disciplinary punishment “should serve as a deterrent” and reiterated the Command’s commitment to “discipline, accountability, and public trust.”
He also urged the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the proper channels, ensuring that complaints against erring officers will be investigated and handled in accordance with the law.
