The National Police Council has endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as substantive Inspector General of Police.

Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, verified this to our correspondent following the council’s 40-minute meeting at the State House in Abuja,

Onanuga stated, “Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP.”

Chronicle NG reports that Monday’s meeting began at about 2:15 pm when Tinubu arrived at the council chamber.

The meeting complies with the requirements of the Police Act 2020, which mandates that the appointment be considered by the Council.

The presidency had stated that the council would meet soon in its statement last Tuesday announcing the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” Onanuga said in the statement.

The IGP, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and all 36 state governors make up the Council, which is presided over by the President.

Our correspondent received confirmation of the planned meeting on Sunday from two senior officials in the Presidency and the police apparatus.

One of the sources stated, “The police council meeting is on Monday.”

“Yes, we are meeting on Monday,” stated the second person, who was also aware of the president’s agenda. FEC meetings typically take place at 12:00 or 1:00 pm.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu, Head of Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack, and the Governors of Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo, and Lagos were among those present.

Disu, 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment on Wednesday following Egbetokun’s resignation.
