The Nigeria Police Force has criticised social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, for using its official uniform without permission.

In a now viral video shared on his social media channels, VeryDarkMan was seen wearing a police uniform and addressing himself as CSP VeryDarkMan, Nigeria’s “number one online police officer.”

The online activist added that he is committed to sanitising the social media arena by using his position to speak out against oppressors, including online sellers.

He further stated that, unlike conventional police officers who must follow several procedures and standards, he would immediately taint the names of offenders brought before him if there was evidence.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Force spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi said the Force has initiated an investigation to ascertain the provenance of the police gear used.

Adejobi also stated that the Force rejects the unauthorised portrayal of its officers in the film.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the unauthorised use of official uniforms and accoutrements by online personality Mr. Martins Otse, popularly known as ‘VDM’, in a video posted on his social media platforms.

“The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorised portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.”

The police stated that, while it appreciates and promotes young Nigerians’ innovation in content creation, it strongly warns against the misuse of police uniforms and insignia.

It further stated that unauthorised use of these products undermines the Force’s ideals and integrity and will not be permitted.

The statement said, “It is important to remind the public that the unauthorised use of police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offence, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties.

“While the Nigeria Police Force recognises and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorised use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated.”
