The Plateau State Police Command said it will restrict movement in six local government areas of the state where re-run elections are scheduled to be held on Saturday.

The restriction is to take effect between the midnight hours of Saturday, February 3, 2024, and 5 p.m.

The spokesman for the command, Alabo Alfred, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the command had stepped up security measures to protect lives and property ahead of and during the poll.

The statement read, “In a bid to ensure hitch-free rerun elections in areas where elections will be conducted on Saturday, February 3, 2024, in the state, the Plateau State Police Command has stepped up security arrangements to protect lives and properties and consequently placed total restriction on all forms of movement across the affected local government areas of the state, which include Jos North, Jos East, Bassa, Jos South, Riyom, and Barkin Ladi LGAs.

“The restriction will take effect between midnight on February 3, 2024, and 5 p.m. However, essential workers such as INEC staff, election observers, medical personnel, and accredited media practitioners are exempted from this restriction.

“He advised the general public, especially the political class and electorate, to cooperate with the police and other security agencies on election duty for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

“He also warns persons who have no business in RAC centres, polling units, or collation centres to steer clear of the election premises to avoid being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

The police boss also warned the political class and their supporters against making inciting utterances that could disrupt peace in the state.

Earlier, the Independent National Electoral Commission distributed sensitive electoral materials in the six local government areas of the state ahead of Saturday’s re-run election in the presence of representatives of political parties, observers, journalists, and security personnel.
