A rare school shooting in the central Philippines on Monday resulted in at least three fatalities and five injuries, according to police.
The shooting, which happened at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte province, at around 9 a.m. (0100 GMT), has not yet been linked by the police.
In a statement, regional police added, “The victims were immediately transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment and appropriate medical intervention.”
According to government station PTV, two individuals, both purportedly students, had been taken into custody, with one being captured on the spot.
“The PNP has already caught the suspects. They acted quickly,” presidential spokeswoman Claire Castro told reporters.
While school shootings are uncommon in the Philippines, targeted gun violence is a staple of regional politics.
A shooting at a graduation ceremony at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippine capital resulted in the deaths of three individuals in 2022.
It was eventually determined that the assassination was motivated by “personal motives.”
Legal gun ownership is strictly regulated in the Southeast Asian country, yet there is a thriving black market for firearms.
