Patience Ozokwor ‘Mama G’ defends villain roles, says they expose society ills

Patience Ozokwor, the Nollywood actress, has expressed pride in the villainous characters she often portrays on screen, saying the roles serve a greater purpose by shedding light on real societal issues.

Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, addressed the frequent misunderstanding surrounding her on-screen persona in a recent video chat.

The 67-year-old film star noted that some viewers mistakenly assume her real-life personality mirrors the wicked characters she plays.

However, she explained that the intent behind such roles is to expose negative behaviours and offer moral lessons to the audience.

“I feel bold to expose the ills in society. Those things happen and nobody wants to expose them. I am exposing them,” she said.

The actress emphasised that her dramatic portrayals of strict mothers, wicked stepmothers, and other tough characters do not reflect who she truly is.

She said she takes pride in her craft because many of her fans grasp the deeper message behind her performances.

“I am not like that, but I expose it. I am extremely proud of myself and Mama G lovers are proud of me,” she added.

Ozokwor has built a decades-long career playing authoritative and antagonistic roles, making her one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.

Still, she has consistently maintained that acting is a profession, and her on-screen characters remain distinct from her real-life identity.
