Dr. Ayodele Renner, a consulting paediatrician, has urged parents to take their snoring children to the doctor because it may be an indication of more serious health issues.

He claims that snoring is frequently brought on by breathing problems, which may be due to infected adenoids.

The child care expert noted that children occasionally snore when their adenoids have swollen as a result of allergies or infections.

According to a child health welfare online site – kidshealth.org – adenoids are a patch of tissue that sits at the very back of the nasal passage.

Adenoids, like tonsils, keep the body healthy by capturing harmful germs and viruses that we swallow or breathe in.

According to the child care website, they play a crucial role in protecting infants and young children from infections.

The child health advocate said, “Adenoids are tissues located below the nose that aid in our ability to fight against infection.

“When adenoids enlarge either due to infections or allergies, they can cause breathing difficulties.

“Children may breathe through their mouths when awake and snore terribly when asleep. It can cause repeated and frequent fever because it can get infected.

“This snoring can be so disruptive to sleep that it keeps everyone awake,” he noted adding that “the frequent visit to hospitals for infections can also be a source of frustration for parents.

Speaking on the management of adenoids, Renner said the condition can be successfully managed conservatively in some children while others may need to get surgery to have the adenoids removed by an ear, nose and throat surgeon as a last resort.

Although the adenoid glands are a component of the immune system and aid in defending the body against viruses and germs, experts say that surgery may be required to remove the adenoids if they swell or grow due to an infection or allergies.
