The federal government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of offenders of suspected sexual assault at a local festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, minister of women affairs and social development, issued the directive on Friday in Abuja, according to a statement signed by Ahmed Danbazau, head of press and public relations for the ministry.

The decision came after a video on social media went viral on Thursday, alleging sexual assaults at the Alue-Do Festival, also known as the “Festival of Fertility” in the Ozoro Kingdom.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed great worry about claims of sexual assault and harassment against women during activities in the Isoko North Local Government Area.

While praising the Delta State Police Command’s prompt response, she advocated for “a transparent, thorough, and accelerated investigation to ensure that all persons implicated are identified and brought to justice without delay.”

She called the instances worrisome, repugnant, and opposed to human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law, pointing out that the Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act) give unambiguous protections against such crimes.

“No cultural or traditional practice can justify or excuse sexual violence in any form. Sexual assault is a serious criminal offense, and all allegations must be thoroughly investigated, with perpetrators held fully accountable under the law,” she said.

According to the minister, sexual assault remains a serious criminal offense that must be thoroughly investigated and all perpetrators prosecuted.

She emphasized the government’s commitment to putting women’s and girls’ safety, dignity, and protection first.

According to Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the ministry would work more closely with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to give victims prompt help, such as psychosocial treatment, medical attention, and legal assistance.

She also stated that efforts would be increased to engage traditional leaders and community partners in addressing harmful traditions and preventing a repetition.

The ministry also urged the people to assist law enforcement officials to ensure justice is served and further incidences are avoided.
