Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Accord Party’s governorship candidate and incumbent governor of Osun State, voted on Saturday in the ongoing governorship election.
Adeleke voted in Ward 02, Polling Unit 009, Abogunde Compound, Ede North Local Government Area of the state.
Adeleke is running for reelection on the Accord Party platform in Saturday’s governorship election.
Chronicle NG reports that the Adeleke Campaign Council has expressed concern about the reported presence of armed security men at the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, on Saturday, the day of the governorship election.
According to a statement issued by the campaign council’s spokeswoman, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the personnel arrived in over ten black Hilux cars and encircled the speaker’s apartment.
It said that the residence had been blocked off, with individuals inside reportedly unable to leave.
However, the council stated that it was unable to independently establish the objective of the security deployment, as well as whether the people were providing protection or performing official tasks.
“We have received reports that the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has been surrounded by armed security personnel who reportedly arrived in more than 10 black Hilux vehicles,” the statement said.
“We have also been informed that the residence has effectively been sealed off, with everyone inside reportedly prevented from leaving the premises.”
The campaign committee urged the relevant security services to promptly clarify the rationale for the deployment and the purported limitation on movement at the property.
Olajengbesi stated that attempts to contact the Commissioner of Police managing election security in the state and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the election were fruitless.
He also stated that attempts to contact the Police Situation Room were unsuccessful, with the publicly available phone line turned off.
The campaign council encouraged security services to ensure that their actions on election day did not instill fear or intimidation in citizens.
“On this Election Day, the people of Osun State deserve an atmosphere free from fear and intimidation. Security deployments must inspire confidence and protect the integrity of the electoral process,” it said.
The council also urged citizens to stay calm and law-abiding as they await an official answer from security authorities.
“The people of Osun State must be allowed to come out peacefully and decide their future according to their own conscience, without intimidation or interference,” the statement added.
