Damilola Soneye, a member representing Obafemi Owode State Constituency in the Ogun State House of Assembly, claims the Speaker, Kunle Oluomo, was impeached for gross misconduct.

Chronicle NG reports that Oluomo was impeached by 18 members out of the 26-member assembly during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Mrs. Bolanle Ajayi.

The Assembly also elected Mr. Oludaisi Elemide, who currently represents Odeda State Constituency in the Assembly, as the new Speaker.

Speaking on Tuesday’s development, Soneye said that the position of the Speaker is to be first among equals, adding that Oluomo was “impeached due to gross misconduct which bothers on high handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance and poor leadership style, financial misappropriation, and inciting members against themselves.”
According to reports, Adegoke Adeyanju, an APC lawmaker representing Yewa North 1 State Constituency, moved the motion for Oluomo’s impeachment, while it was seconded by another APC lawmaker, Ademola Adeniran, who is representing Sagamu II State Constituency.
It was also reported that Adeyanju entered the Assembly chamber with the Maze in the company of other lawmakers.

Elemide told reporters after being elected as the new Speaker that the state’s citizens could expect the best from him.

“We are law-abiding legislators. We want the world to know that there has been a change in leadership.
“18 members signed for me to be the speaker. People should remain calm. We are in the custody of all the authorities of the House. We are saying that the new leadership will support the governor.”
He explained that Governor Dapo Abiodun is completely unaware of the impeachment proceedings.

The clerk and deputy clerk, Mr. Deji Adeyemo and Mrs. Funmilayo Adeyemi, were also present at the plenary.

The Assembly complex was heavily guarded by security forces, including police and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.
