Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to avoid internal disputes and litigation as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.
Obi made the appeal on Sunday in Abuja, where he formally joined the party alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, at the NDC national secretariat.
The former Anambra governor recently confirmed his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Kwankwaso had earlier disclosed ongoing consultations with the NDC leadership.
Addressing supporters, Obi cautioned that legal battles within the party could undermine efforts to establish a credible political platform.
“Please let there be no litigation. Party members, please don’t go to court. We want to build a party; we are not lawyers,” he said.
He also appealed to the judiciary to help resolve lingering disputes, stressing the need to focus on nation-building rather than internal conflicts.
“We want to build a country where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody,” Obi added.
During the event, Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, NDC national chairman, presented membership cards to both Obi and Kwankwaso.
Speaking afterwards, Kwankwaso said their engagement with the party was driven by shared ideology and common political goals. He urged Nigerians to register with the NDC ahead of the party’s membership deadline.
