Popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has died at the age of 40 after a private battle with cancer, throwing Nigeria’s entertainment industry into mourning.

News of his death emerged on Tuesday evening, with colleagues and close associates confirming the tragic development. The actor had reportedly been battling cancer away from the public eye for months.

His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media, with fans and celebrities paying tribute to one of Nollywood’s most recognisable stars.

Concerns about Ekubo’s health had intensified in recent months after his prolonged absence from public life and social media. His last major online activity dated back to late 2024, prompting speculation among followers about his wellbeing.

A recent viral video showing the actor interacting with children further fuelled concern, as many fans noticed he appeared noticeably slimmer and subdued.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor studied Law at the University of Calabar and also earned a diploma in Mass Communication.

He first gained national attention after emerging first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition, a breakthrough that launched his acting career.

Ekubo went on to become one of Nollywood’s most sought-after actors, known for his charm, versatility and stylish screen presence. His performance in the movie In the Cupboard earned him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award at the Best of Nollywood Awards in 2012.

Beyond acting, his personal life frequently made headlines, especially his high-profile relationship with American-born model Fancy Acholonu.

The pair became engaged in 2021 and announced wedding plans under the hashtag #FalexxForever. However, the relationship ended abruptly just months before the planned ceremony, shocking fans and followers.

Their breakup later became the subject of public discussion after Acholonu revealed details about their relationship in interviews and social media posts.

Before his death, Ekubo had also addressed frequent questions about his marital status, saying he was more focused on building wealth and advancing his career in the film industry.

Several Nollywood stars have since shared emotional tributes in his honour.

Actress Funke Akindele wrote on Instagram, “Rest in peace, Alex. I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”

Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also mourned him, writing, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”

Meanwhile, actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described the loss as heartbreaking, saying Nollywood had lost “a rare soul.”

As of the time of filing this report, Ekubo’s family had not released an official statement regarding his death.
