The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have announced plans to go on a nationwide strike in response to the assault and kidnapping of their president, Joe Ajaero.

According to a press conference conducted on Friday, the strike will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

The leaders of the joint union have issued a six-point demand to the Federal Government, including the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State and the Area Commander, among other officials, for their alleged complicity in the brutalization and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.

Remember that suspected state agents and security operatives descended on Ajaero and other Labour leaders, smashing their vehicles, injuring them, and taking handsets, money, and ATM cards, among other valuables, from the Labour leaders and others who had gathered at the NLC State Secretariat to begin a scheduled protest over pending labour issues.

The NLC President, other national leaders of the NLC, and their counterpart from the TUC, were at the state secretariat in Owerri to protest, among other things, a backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

The attack, brutalization, and battering of Ajaero prompted widespread indignation and condemnation.
The NLC and TUC leaders are scheduled to meet next Tuesday to discuss how to respond to the attack.
